Why is immortality so important to gilgamesh

I wish we would include this in our public education along with Beowulf and Shakespeare. Alongside Greek mythology, ancient mythology like this has its own mysticism to it. I remember learning about this epic when I was in high school, so this is refreshing to re-read. Enkidu passing was Gilgamesh realizing that maybe his mortal life was fine just the way it was, although he lost his best friend and brother, he gained wisdom to live the rest of his life in peace.

An informative article about an epic that I knew little about. The story of The Epic of Gilgamesh is fascinating. The primary lesson about enjoying life and not worrying too much about death would probably have been helpful for people who believed they were at the mercy of the gods more often than not. I wish I started learning about early epic poems and stories that set the foundation for writing stories even to this day.

Schools should have their class read the epic of Gilgamesh in schools, along with stories such as Beowulf and Hamlet. Indeed, an excellent way to talk about a rarely mention part of our species history, that being the being of recorded history. It is funny how Gilgamesh became immortal but not in the way he expected. Gilgamesh was a required book for my curriculum my sophomore year of high school. I found this book to be a really interesting read and I really enjoyed reading it.

I thought your article was very interesting and it really covered the topic well. Interesting story. I have heard references to Gilgamesh but never knew the details surrounding the myth. People have been searching for the key to immortality for thousands and thousands of years. This is just another example in mythology about another failed attempt on achieving immortality.

You think that people would learn after the first few tries but no. I find it interesting that Gilgamesh let the flower bestowing youthfulness slip through his grasp. He already let immortality slip through his grasp and now he let youthfulness as well. Maybe if Gilgamesh slept to begin with, he would have never failed the test from Utnapishtim. Such an interesting and informative article!

Very captivating. I have previously heard the epic the Gilgamesh however did not know this aspect of the story. The element of immortality has played such a key factor in my stories and it is so very interesting that it has also played a role in Gilgamesh. Great job, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article. Not everything lasts forever, and that includes life.

I really loved this article and its story. Knowing that it was one of the first pieces of recorded literature just makes it that much more amazing. Any story that follows the search for purpose after death surely is something many people can relate to. If he dies, he will be reunited with his closest friend. However, Gilgamesh seems to really desire to have immortality and by the end of the story he is searching for the immortal Uta-napishti so that the secret of immortality will be revealed to him.

Instead of ever having to face his fear and experience death, he plans to conquer his fear by becoming immortal. His plan is foiled, though, when a snake eats his plant-like coral. The outcast Hercules searches to be a true hero, ultimately he will conquer every obstacle that will lead him to regain his life back home with the rest of the gods. The son of Zeus and Hera is turned mortal by Hades only to be killed; Hercules survived and was left with Godlike strength.

Hercules stayed on earth therefore raised by a mortal family, his…. The humbling of Gilgamesh when Enkidu shows up and fights him. We can use this as saying when we are feeling full of our self and over powering that we always have one person that can equal or even better us to bring us back down to Earth. This shows us not to be afraid of what might happen to only worry about what is currently happening and that we cannot get away from….

From this we can pull away the three main building blocks behind what makes an epic hero; flaw being beowulf relies on his sword and shield, so he must sacrifice his men to have his pride and being a glorious warrior. Although he came back in a literal sense, he also was resurrected from his knowledge of his loyal men to his loyalness to them. Finally he was restituted; by him passing away, it came to the end of the hero and his journey, but figuratively he passed the torch onto Wiglow of being his successor.

Beowulf definitely was invested in himself, but that did not hold him back from being an epic…. This desire for immortality causes Gilgamesh to go on his quest in search for Utnapishtim after he sees his beloved brother and friend die a simple, debilitating death at the hands of the gods.

This is the ultimate form of power to Gilgamesh and with it he can overcome the looming inevitability of…. The Ghost died without being free from the guilt of his sins so he comes back to Hamlet to avenge him. Hamlet gets revenge for his father so that he can be relieved from his guilt and go on to heaven. Next he makes it to the garden where gods tell him where he can find immortality. Gilgamesh eventually makes his way across the sea of death to Dilnum where the secret of immortality is.

When Gilgamesh finally gets to Dilnum he is told the secret by Utnapishtim, the only mortal to be immoral due to being raised by the gods due to the floods of his land as a child.

Utnapishtim takes Gilgamesh to the location of the flower of immorality. Gilgamesh had gone through many adventures which helped him to gain wisdom to go along with his godly powers. He learns that the greatest type of immortality is the nonphysical. After realizing that he was not a god-man, Gilgamesh understood that the real glory is in the deeds you have done and the people you have affected in a good manor. So in conclusion the significance of finding immorality to Gilgamesh shows a lot about himself and the society that he lived in and ruled.

Focusing on the time with the family and friends was very important, and that focus helped and still helps people feel immortal in remembering the memories of ones friends and loved ones.
