The Latest. It certainly can get confusing for teachers, parents and students alike. What do all of these acronyms mean, and which ones do we really need to be paying attention to this year? The CSAP was designed to measure how well students are learning material from the Colorado Model Content Standards, the established content standards that all Colorado public school students should learn.
This test was discontinued in No more CSAP. After nearly 20 years, Colorado modified their state education standards or the classroom learning expectations to the Colorado Academic Standards. The updated learning expectations challenge students in new and different ways and expect more from them than ever before.
The new standards, however, needed a new way to measure how well students were learning. This assessment helped bridge the gap between the old and new standards. TCAP assessed students in reading, writing and math through Going forward, no more TCAP. In the spring of , Colorado started with the new assessments in science and social studies. Teachers are working very hard in Garfield Re-2 to develop regular check-ins that make sure their students are being successful in each content area and at each grade level.
This is a welcome change. Lastly, by the time we get the state test data back, it is too late to do anything to adjust instruction for the kids we just taught. I think I would have done horribly on many of the standardized tests students are expected to take because I was not a great book learner, but I made up for it in grit, resourcefulness, a strong work ethic and a genuine love of learning. However, there are signs that the new CMAS tests and revisions to college entrance tests may be addressing some parts of this issue better.
I am really trying to keep these elements alive, but it is harder to do now than in the past. Real intelligence comes in many forms and is dynamic.
It all really depends on perseverance and a willingness to always want to learn, no matter what test scores a student receives.
We use test results, along with a slew of other data, to inform instruction for each child. Standardized assessments give parents, students and staff the assurance that our students can and do perform at the highest levels. Cons: Test results can take on an outsized significance in the eyes of the misinformed.
Test scores alone are a poor indicator of teacher effectiveness. There is nothing on these assessments most parents would not want their child to know and be able to do. So it makes sense to prepare students to do their best. This could be done effectively with less assessment because the time can be excessive.
