Theodor Geisel, better known to the world as Dr. Seuss books are known for their whimsical rhymes and quirky characters, which have names like the Lorax and the Sneetches and live in places like Whoville. There he met Helen Palmer, his first wife and the person who encouraged him to become a professional illustrator. Back in America, Geisel worked as a cartoonist for a variety of magazines and in advertising. The story of a mischievous cat in a tall striped hat came about after his publisher asked him to produce a book using new-reader vocabulary words that could serve as an entertaining alternative to the school reading primers children found boring.
Some Dr. Seuss books tackled serious themes. Many Dr. In March , Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced it would no longer publish six of these books. Geisel next worked for Standard Oil in the advertising department, where he spent the next 15 years. His ad for Flit, a popular insecticide, became nationally famous. Ted lived there, at 74 Fairfield Street, with his parents and older sister until he left Springfield to go to Dartmouth College in He returned home during holiday and summer breaks, and even lived in the family house for half a year in after studying at Oxford University and traveling abroad in Europe.
Ten years later, Dr. However, both are real roads in Springfield that Ted would have known and traveled during his childhood. It is not known why Ted decided to have these two roads intersect in his story, but the small detail is a playful inside joke for those who are familiar with Springfield.
Perhaps he selected Bliss Street because it worked best in the rhyme, or because of the concept of bliss, or because it was the name of a prominent local family in Springfield. You might read elsewhere that Dr Seuss wrote more books than the ones on this list. That's true but the other books he wrote were illustrated by other people so I haven't included those on this list.
Dr Seuss books are great fun to share with your child and, as a bonus, they'll also help him develop something called phonological awareness , a critical skill for learning to read later on. This is because the rhythm and the rhyme build connections in children's brains in a way that other types of language don't.
