I will remember this the next time I go watch my brother play chess! I agree with you, chess is certainly a sport. Many people here in the comments are quick to dismiss it as a game and not a sport, but most sports ARE games, played competitively, with physical exertion. In an interview with Dick Cavett, Fischer pointed out that when someone gets physically tired after sitting for hours on end, their concentration begins to fade — allowing their opponent to quickly swoop in and knock them out.
Taking a quick look at the Olympic lineup in recent years, you can see a whole bunch of traditionally strenuous sports- swimming, gymnastics, volleyball. Yup, all definitely sports. Curling seems to have one slacker, but the rest of the team generally makes up for it. There is a whole category of about 15 events which are no more strenuous than chess, though.
All they involve is a series of complex mental calculations followed by making just the right move at the right time…though this particular move does happen to be made with a gun. If standing still and shooting at stationary targets counts as a sport, why not chess?
Truthfully chess is a sport. Chess in its present form in the UK can never and should never be considered a sport, because the playing field is not level for all players. Why should an inexperienced newcomer to a club not be allowed any handicap like in golf when playing someone who has played the game all their life, who is several hundred rating points higher, and expects the RIGHT to win the game without giving out any concessions.
It also involves skill. If chess increases blood pressure it is a sport. For example in counter strike: global offensive to be a professional in the game takes map knowledge. Which is knowing the exact pixel lineup of spot on the map from a different spot to throw a smoke, he, incgrenade, flashbang, to get them in the right spot, to have good results. All of which have unique nade spots and rotations. Cross hair placement is also a big part of the game to always know where head level is to pre aim certain angles.
In rainbow six siege you need to know every single operator and what they do and what guns they have and what speed they are. Both take great skill and thousands of hours of mastery to play at the highest level. This is what happens when you give out participation trophies. People really start considering games like chess and poker to be a sport.
It is a sport to me, because it is fun too! Your email address will not be published. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Notify me of new posts by email.

One lapse of concentration and suddenly a good position is transformed into a losing one. Each game is a drama in which the outcome is uncertain until the very end. Well established. Is motorsport essential to human survival? Is motorsport regulated by an objective governing body? Now apply the same questions to chess: Does chess exhibit competition?
Does chess require skill? Is chess a leisure activity? Is chess essential for human survival? Is chess regulated by an objective governing body? So professional sport isn't sport because it's somebody's job, rather than leisure? And do you have a citation for the properties of sport that you're claiming are "generally understood"? For example, if you ask Google to define sport, it says "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment," which mentions nothing about leisure or governing bodies and includes a requirement for physical exertion.
How does that follow from what was written above? You realize professional sport is entertainment right? Therefore it's a leisure activity. Watching professional sport is a leisure activity. Playing professional sport is a job. What does professional sport accomplish? It entertains. There may be professional athletes engaged in the activity but the purpose of the activity itself it leisure.
Don't mistake those engaged in the activity from the activity itself. And you understand I'm NOT saying professional sport is not a sport? Precisely because professional sport entertains, it is a leisure activity and so is very much a sport according to the definition. Show 4 more comments. Truly it does not go by the blind definition of Sport as " an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
