Disgaea 3 was the first installment in the series to get a next-generation update when it released on the PS3 a few years ago. Of course, it doesn't always look like a next-generation update far from it, actually , but it sure looks a lot better on a high-definition television than your average PlayStation 2 game.
And it plays great too! Where Disgaea 3 truly manages to take advantage of its new platform is with its downloadable content, which got started in earnest in the December after its initial release.
Fans like me were pleased to see old standbys like Disgaea 2's Adell and Overlord Priere from La Pucelle: Tactics putting in appearances, even if I did have to pay to access them. Thankfully, aside from the classic characters, there also was a downloadable side story floating around starring Raspberyl, the story's heroine. That add-ons alone add quite a few hours of gameplay to an already lengthy to put it mildly experience.
The game itself really loses nothing in the translation to the next-generation. That is it to say, it's a lot like its PS2 predecessors. It's just as amusing as before, starring as it does a high school demon named Lord Mao who happens to be plotting revenge against his father while attending or more likely, not attending classes at the Maritsu Evil Academy.
Usual elements like the hubs make their return; as do the graphics, oddly enough. Much criticism has been heaped on the sprites, which lack every bit as much detail as before, even though they happen to be in high-definition. Evilities are similar to the unique abilties for each character from Disgaea 2 , and while characters have 1 primary Evility, they can equip any secondary Evility as long as it is not unique to another character.
Another new feature is Class World, similar to Item World where the player goes inside an item, the player goes inside a character to improve Aplitudes, Movement, learn new Evilities and Skills from Members of the same club. There is only 10 floors and at the end, there is a Class Boss depending if the character is Good-For-Nothing or Genius. A new feature in Item World is Reverse Pirating, by defeating Pirates and clearing the stage they appear on.
The player can pass a bill which allows them to Reverse Pirate. It requires a Pirate Ship and on Floors 20, 40, 60, 80 and must be cleared first , the player will travel to a stage filled with Chests, Innocents and a Level Sphere. The player can throw the Innocents and other items to the Pirate Ship to gain their bonuses. The Vita version contains 2 brand new characters Rutile and Stella not seen in other Disgaea games, 4 new scenarios, updated character portraits and Tera level magic.
Disgaea Wiki Explore. Absence of Justice Absence of Detention. Alliance of Vengeance Disgaea 5 Complete. Generic characters have unique attacks tied their class and their are Awakening moves. There are some neat strategies you can do like protecting a near-death character by throwing them back into the base panel and then drawing enemies towards it so you can pop out and hopefully strike with a multi-panel Awakened special attack.
Hardcore players will also appreciate the Detention Room, which now lets you bench up to characters. Nippon Ichi also upgraded the warehouse to store items. The record shop from Disgaea 4 returns too and keeps track of your play time. Other enhancements include animated character portraits for event scenes and rear touchpad controls to rotate the battlefield. Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention is a massive game, probably the meatiest available for Vita right now.
