Fears of a multi-year economic funk appear to be more pervasive than fears of s-like inflation. By William Pesek Senior Contributor. By James Conca Contributor. By Bruce Y. After a collision with Bill Whitehouse, who was later to be killed in an F2 crash at Rheims, Bernie was thrown from the cockpit and landed in the public car park.
He went into a number of business ventures, demonstrating his financial acumen by making a lot of money. Bernie was, amongst other things, a Mercedes dealer, and sold cars to stars such as Shirley Bassey. Less visibly, Bernie was a property speculator, and he made a pile of money. Bernie returned to motor racing in , and at a fairly high level. The Connaught team was not greatly successful, and Bernie returned to the cockpit in a failed attempt to qualify for the Monaco F1 GP.
Lewis-Evans was lured away from Connaught to drive for the Vanwall team, although still managed by Bernie. At the last race of the season, in Morocco, the engine of Lewis-Evans' car seized up, and he crashed. The car burst into flames and he suffered dreadful burns. Despite being flown to a specialist burns hospital in England, Stuart Lewis-Evans died. Bernie was so shocked by the event that he quit the sport. Salvadori survived race driving to retire from it, and his name will crop up again.
As will be seen, a great many of the people whom Bernie has met during his long involvement with motor racing have lost their lives on the track. Death casts a long shadow over the sport. He became Rindt's friend and manager, and also took a share in the Lotus Formula 2 team. The two travelled to races aboard one of a batch of Beagle Bulldog aircraft Bernie had bought when the manufacturer went bankrupt.
For the season Rindt was driving for the brilliant Colin Chapman's Lotus F1 team, and was tragically killed in an accident during practice for that year's Italian Grand Prix at Monza. He was leading the F1 championship at the time and was subsequently proclaimed F1's first and only posthumous champion. Rindt had been a friend as well as a business associate, and Bernie again turned his back on the lethal F1 circus.
But he was not gone for long. A name to note: Rindt's mechanic during his last season was one Herbie Blash, who formed an association with Bernie that has lasted to this day.
Forty years later that sum of money might seem laughable. Tauranac had founded the Brabham team with fellow Australian driver the great Jack Brabham. He stayed on as Bernie's designer for a while, but there was soon a parting of the ways. Tauranac left the team in early , and engineer Gordon Murray was promoted to the chief designer position.
Herbie Blash became Team Manager in During his time as Brabham boss Bernie employed a raft of famous motor racing names to drive his cars. Ayrton Senna was considered for a seat at Brabham, and succesfully tested for the team at the Paul Ricard circuit in It has been reported that Nelson Piquet would not consider him as a partner and convinced Italian food firm Parmalat, Brabham's main sponsor, that an Italian driver should get the second seat.
That Italian was Teo Fabi. As we now know, being turned down by Brabham let Senna's career take him to McLaren and three world championships; no driver can become a legend without being in the right car at the right time. At the time of Senna's death in there was some ill-feeling against Bernie by Senna's family, and he was not allowed to attend the funeral. That seems to have blown over, and Bernie is now an advisor to the Senna foundation. Bernie has been quoted as saying that he rates Senna as the best ever F1, capable of besting Michael Schumacher if they were in identical cars.
I have no opinion on that eternal debate. Under Jack Brabham the team had won two constructors world championships, in and Balestre on the other hand banned British teams and issued fines, amongst many other tactics.
Balestre was a vain man who loved attention and Ecclestone knew this. When Balestre would try and negotiate with the other British team owners, Ecclestone would quickly ring them up after and in a short time have them siding with him again.
Knowing that Chapnam would convince the other British owners to side with Balestre, Ecclestone quickly called Chapman and convinced him to stay on his side, playing to his vanity by praising his designing genius, needless to say it worked. What this resulted in though was everyone taking Ecclestone seriously.
Another string to his bow was his personal relationships with the tracks and the governments of a number of the host countries, most notably King Juan Carlos, who granted him permission to take control of the circuit from Balestre in the Jarama grand prix, in Spain. Ecclestone was able to threaten that the race would be boycotted due to these personal relationships and everyone believed him.
Balestre had declared that the race would not count towards the championship, but Ecclestone urged the teams to take part saying that he would cover the costs, he even used his own tyres from his warehouse as sponsor Goodyear refused to provide tyres due to the illegitimacy of the race.
It proved to be a close call for Ecclestone and he later admitted that he could not afford another pirate race like that. In the end Ecclestone won, although Balestre would call it compromise. This was formed in the shape of the Concord Agreement, whereby essentially the FIA agreed to more equally distributed funds and technical regulation changes. The teams agreed to appear in every race in the world championship and the FOCA teams also agreed to share travel expenses equally amongst all teams who score world championship points.
The FIA still harnessed the power of the rules and regulations, whilst Ecclestone took charge of most if not all commercial aspects of Formula One. This resulted in Bernie himself profiting massively. However, what is also worth noting is Ecclestone made alot of other team bosses massively wealthy at the same time.
Bernie Ecclestone. Ecclestone thrives off this and says that politics are good for the sport as they create press and larger viewerships, which of course leads to more income. Formula One still remains very secretive and is run by the select few, described as a cake that gets shared between the teams.
For those involved, they are very protective over their slices getting smaller. This is where Ecclestone comes into his element, whilst he still makes a huge amount of money out of the sport, the sport needs him more than he needs it. He protects the teams investments, resolves disputes and manages negations. Others have claimed that the sport would be more profitable without him and that Ecclestone is out of touch, however the majority are unsure.
Ecclestone is one of the shrewdest businessmen alive and by looking back over his early life you can see what made this man who he is today.
This mystery Ecclestone has created for himself is arguably his greatest tool, as the less people know about him the easier his battles and negotiations are. Bernie Ecclestone has become a billionaire, not by inventing something or creating something.
